A compact but feisty puffer from Southeast Asia, Pao abei hails from the river systems of the Meklong, Chao Phraya, and Mekong basins. Drainage networks that wind through some of the region's most biodiverse freshwater habitats. Despite its modest size, this fish carries a personality that far outweighs its inches. It is notoriously aggressive and is generally best housed alone, as tank mates tend to become targets sooner or later. That said, keepers who spend time with this species often come away genuinely charmed by it. Pao abei is an observant, curious fish that quickly learns to recognize its owner and will actively investigate anything new in its environment. Its activity pattern leans crepuscular, meaning it tends to be most lively around dawn and dusk, retreating to cover when the lights are at full brightness during the day. Good hiding spots and a well-structured aquascape are appreciated. As a carnivore, it needs meaty foods and hard-shelled invertebrates to help wear down the fused beak-like teeth that all puffers carry. With proper solo housing and a varied diet, this species can be a genuinely rewarding long-term companion for an intermediate keeper comfortable managing a fish that does things strictly on its own terms.
