Slender Danio

Slender danios (Brachydanio aesculapii) are small, slim fish that carry a distinctive pattern of vertical brown bars toward the front of the body, shifting into two rows of small brown spots toward the tail. A combination that makes them fairly easy to tell apart from similar danio relatives. They come from a narrow, isolated range in the Rakhine Yoma mountains of western Myanmar, a region naturally cut off from the rest of the country, which helps explain why the fish remained little-known for so long and still circulates in the trade under informal names like 'Danio sp. pantheri' or 'D. sp. hieroglyph'. Despite their obscure origins they are genuinely undemanding fish, placing no unusual requirements on water chemistry and slotting comfortably into a peaceful community with tetras, livebearers, loaches, and other small cyprinids. Like other danios they are active schooling fish, and a group of at least eight to ten individuals will look far more natural and keep individuals calmer than a smaller number would. Males also show noticeably better color when competing for female attention within a proper-sized group. Breeding follows the typical danio egg-scattering approach and is achievable for anyone willing to set up a small separate spawning container. A solid choice for newer keepers who want something a little different from the usual danio options.
