Hood coral (Stylophora wellsi) is a small but structurally interesting SPS coral native to a relatively limited range in the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, coastal Somalia, and Madagascar. In the wild it grows exclusively in shallow, high-energy zones where wave action is constant, which tells you a lot about what it wants in captivity: serious flow and plenty of intense light. The colony form is distinctive. Short, chunky branches no more than about an inch and a half across, with blunt rounded tips rather than the tapered points you see on many other branching corals. Corallites sit tightly packed along the branches and are partly immersed or cone-shaped, each capped with a small hood that can face different directions, giving the surface a pleasantly irregular texture. The coenosteum between polyps is covered in coarse spinules that catch the light nicely. Coloration is a straightforward uniform cream, so this isn't a species you're keeping for bold pigmentation. The appeal is more about form and texture. Its limited natural range and high-energy habitat requirements put it in intermediate territory for reef keepers. If you can nail the flow and lighting, it's a rewarding and somewhat unusual piece for an SPS-focused system.
