Fowler's Surgeonfish (Acanthurus fowleri) is a large, active tang native to the clear reef edges and drop-offs of the Western Pacific, ranging from the Philippines and Indonesia through Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and northwestern Australia. In the wild it often grazes algae directly from sponge surfaces, which hints at how specialized its feeding habits can be. In the aquarium it spends most of the day on the move, working over rockwork in a steady, purposeful way that makes it one of the more engaging fish to watch in a larger system. New arrivals tend to be shy and may tuck into the rockwork for the first week or two, but patience pays off as the fish grows more confident and starts treating the whole tank as its territory. Like all surgeonfishes, it carries a sharp retractable spine on either side of the caudal peduncle. Rarely used aggressively in a well-managed tank, but worth respecting when netting or handling. Tangs as a group are notably prone to marine ich and velvet, so a proper quarantine period before introduction is genuinely important here, not just good practice. A varied algae-based diet and stable water quality go a long way toward keeping this species healthy over its long potential lifespan.
