The Japanese Surgeonfish (Acanthurus japonicus), also known as the Powder Black Surgeon or White-nose Surgeonfish, is a handsome, dark-bodied tang with a distinctive pale patch near the snout that makes it easy to identify at a glance. In the wild it ranges from Sulawesi through the Philippines up to the Ryukyu Islands, where it inhabits clear, shallow, wave-exposed reef fronts and lagoons. Out there it's often a social fish, forming loose groups of a dozen or so individuals, and sometimes gathering into much larger aggregations. It spends its days cruising rockwork and reef structure, grazing algae almost continuously. An active, purposeful swimmer that rarely sits still. In the aquarium that same restless energy means it needs serious swimming room, which is why a large tank is non-negotiable. Its temperament is a bit of a split personality: it can be territorial and assertive toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, but tends to be calm and relatively untroubled by dissimilar tankmates. That combination of aggression toward its own kind, high activity level, and sensitivity to water quality puts this species firmly in the advanced category. Get the conditions right, though, and a Japanese Surgeonfish will serve as one of the most effective natural algae managers in a large reef or FOWLR setup, with a lifespan that can stretch well into double digits.
