Found racing through strong currents over rocky substrates in the Tocantins River basin of Brazil, Aguarunichthys tocantinsensis is a hefty freshwater predator that can push past a foot in length at full size. Its natural habitat tells you a lot about what this fish needs in captivity: good water movement, solid filtration, and plenty of room to move. A 75-gallon tank is really the starting point for juveniles, with larger quarters becoming necessary as the fish grows into its adult frame. As a carnivore, it will take meaty foods readily, and its feeding response can be quite assertive, so tankmates need to be chosen carefully. Anything small enough to fit in its mouth is at risk, and even similarly sized fish should be introduced with caution. This is not a fish for a community setup. It suits a species-only arrangement or a carefully planned predator display. The intermediate care rating is fair: this species is not particularly delicate in terms of water chemistry, but its size, diet, and temperament demand a keeper who has thought through the long-term commitment. With a lifespan of up to a decade, it rewards patient, experienced hands.
