Red Dead Men's Fingers (Alcyonium glomeratum) is a soft coral native to the cooler waters of the Northeast Atlantic, ranging from the North Sea into the Baltic Sea. The common name comes from its habit of forming fleshy, finger-like lobes that cluster together from a shared base. When the polyps retract, the colony does take on an unsettlingly hand-like appearance. In life, the vivid red coloration makes it one of the more visually distinct soft corals available to temperate marine hobbyists. As a sessile organism, it stays put once established and spends its time filtering food from the water column rather than competing aggressively with neighbors, making it reef safe and generally easy to place in a display. Because it comes from temperate rather than tropical waters, it is best suited to cold-water or cool marine setups rather than a standard tropical reef tank. This is an important distinction that the care level rating of beginner refers to in terms of handling and placement, not necessarily compatibility with a warm reef. Moderate flow and moderate lighting suit it well, and it rewards patient keepers with a genuinely unusual look that stands apart from the typical soft coral offerings in the hobby.
