Angel abu polos (Centropyge vroliki), widely known in the hobby as the pearlscale angelfish, is one of the more recognizable dwarf angels you'll encounter at a marine fish store. The body is a soft grayish-white with scales that catch the light in a way that earns the pearlscale name, and this pale canvas is offset by deep black coloration toward the rear of the body, dorsal fin, and tail. A contrast that makes the fish easy to identify at a glance. In the wild it ranges widely across the Indo-Pacific, showing up on rubble zones and reef edges where it picks at algae and small organisms throughout the day. That natural grazing behavior carries over into the aquarium, where it tends to be active and constantly on the move, exploring rockwork for something to nibble. Like most Centropyge angels, it carries a reputation as a potential threat to corals and clam mantles, so reef keepers need to weigh that risk carefully. Some individuals are well-behaved, others develop a taste for sessile invertebrates. Intermediate experience is a reasonable expectation here: not a fish for total beginners, but not demanding enough to intimidate a keeper who has a few marine tanks under their belt.
