The ogre catfish (Asterophysus batrachus) is one of those fish that earns its common name completely honestly. Native to the blackwater rivers of the Orinoco and Negro basins in South America, this catfish has evolved an extraordinarily distensible stomach that allows it to engulf prey that most predators would walk past without a second glance. Reports of it taking fish approaching double its own body length are not exaggeration. This animal is a dedicated ambush predator with a mouth and gut built around the concept of eating things that seem too large to eat. In the aquarium, the message is simple: anything tankmate-sized is a potential meal, full stop. This is not a community fish by any stretch, and even moderately large companions are at risk. It does reasonably well for an intermediate keeper who can provide appropriate space and a dedicated species setup or a tank with only fish genuinely too large to be swallowed. Feeding is straightforward given its omnivorous nature and enthusiastic appetite. Breeding has not been documented in captivity as far as available records show. With a potential lifespan stretching well over a decade, this is a long-term commitment to a genuinely fascinating, if ruthlessly efficient, predator.
