The Andean Catfish (Astroblepus ubidiai) is a compact bottom-dweller native to the fast-moving highland streams of Ecuador, specifically the Mira River basin and the Pacific coastal drainages along the country's western slopes. In the wild it clings to rocky substrates in well-oxygenated, clear water, and that background gives you a good sense of what it appreciates in captivity. Coloration tends toward muted browns and grays with subtle patterning. Practical camouflage for a fish that spends its time hugging the riverbed rather than showing off in open water. As catfish go, this is a reasonably manageable species. The care level is forgiving enough for newer keepers who are comfortable maintaining clean, well-filtered conditions, and its modest adult size means a mid-sized tank will serve it well without demanding a massive footprint. Diet is straightforward. It accepts a range of foods as a true omnivore, which makes feeding uncomplicated. Behavior is generally peaceful, though like most benthic catfish it will claim a favorite cave or sheltered corner as its own. Provide smooth rocks, driftwood, or ceramic hides and it will settle in quickly. Not a flashy centerpiece fish, but a characterful and rewarding addition to a South American community setup.
