The false black lancer (Bagrichthys obscurus) is a mid-sized bagrid catfish native to the Chao Phraya, Bang Pakong, and Mekong river systems of Indochina, where adults make seasonal migrations into flooded areas to spawn. The common name 'lancer' refers to the elongated dorsal spine characteristic of the genus. A feature shared across most of its seven relatives. In terms of looks, this species is fairly understated: a uniformly brown, slender body with no midlateral stripe or patterning to speak of, which actually helps it blend naturally into a dimly lit, leaf-littered setup. The mouth is notably small and narrow, so tankmates of even modest size have nothing to fear from it in terms of predation. That said, it is strongly territorial toward other bottom-dwellers, particularly its own kind. Males are especially combative with one another and should not be kept together unless the tank is very large. A better arrangement is one male with three or more females, which also helps spread any dominant aggression. Keeping a school of active mid-water fish alongside them can encourage the lancers to venture out more during the day. Breeding has not been documented in home aquariums. Despite the territorial streak, this species leaves upper- and mid-water inhabitants alone, making it workable in a thoughtfully composed community.
