The banded blenny (Salarias fasciatus) is one of those fish that rewards patience. Once it settles in, you'll find it has a genuinely distinct character. Found across a vast range from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way to Samoa, this species occupies shallow reef flats, lagoon edges, and rubble-strewn intertidal zones, typically anywhere algae grows thickly over rock and coral. In the aquarium it earns its keep as a grazer, using its hard, chisel-like jaw to scrape biofilm and algae from rocks and glass. Leaving those characteristic little marks hobbyists call blenny kisses. That same jaw pulls double duty as a defensive tool, capable of delivering a sharp blow to anything that gets too confrontational. Generally peaceful toward unrelated fish, it does get territorial with other blennies and similarly shaped species, so tankmates should be chosen with that in mind. It tends to claim a cave or crevice in the rockwork as home base, retreating there when nervous or at night, but grows noticeably bolder once it recognizes familiar faces. Fish and humans alike. A well-established live rock system with good algae growth suits it well, and it can be a reasonable choice for reef keepers newer to saltwater who want an active, characterful fish with a genuine job to do.
