Jerdon's Baril (Barilius canarensis) is a sleek, active cyprinid native to the clear, fast-flowing hill streams of southwestern India, where it rockets through water over sandy and rocky substrates. Its most distinctive feature is a double row of bluish-green markings running the length of the body, an upper series of 9 to 13 round or oval spots and a smaller cluster of spots restricted to the front portion of the body, along with broad white margins on the dorsal and anal fins. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in terms of basic water management, this fish is not a straightforward community choice. It is an extremely fast swimmer and an aggressive feeder, which makes it a poor match for slow or timid tankmates. Smaller fish are also at real risk of being eaten. The ideal setup pairs Jerdon's Barils with similarly robust, active cyprinids such as Dawkinsia or larger Devario species, while hardy bottom-dwellers like Botia or Garra can occupy the lower levels. This is a shoaling rather than a true schooling species, meaning it develops a social hierarchy within the group. Keeping fewer than five individuals often results in persistent bullying of subordinate fish, so a group of five or more is the responsible minimum. It needs generous open water and plenty of horizontal swimming room to thrive.
