About

The Vagra Baril (Barilius vagra) is a mid-sized cyprinid from the fast-flowing hill streams of South and Central Asia, ranging across a broad arc from Afghanistan and Pakistan through India, Nepal, and Bangladesh to Sri Lanka. In the wild it favors gravelly, rocky substrates with good current, and replicating that kind of well-oxygenated, active water movement is key to keeping it well in captivity. Visually, it carries 10 to 14 vertical bars along each flank that stop at the lateral line rather than wrapping underneath, and the dorsal and caudal fins are edged in grey. Useful details for telling it apart from related species in the genus. Behaviorally, this fish is a genuinely fast swimmer and a competitive feeder, which means slow, timid, or very small tankmates are likely to have a rough time. It works best alongside robust, similarly-sized pelagic cyprinids, think Dawkinsia, other Barilius, or larger Devario, plus bottom-dwellers like Garra, Botia, and Schistura. It's a shoaling rather than tightly schooling species with a real pecking order, so a group of five or more is necessary to spread any social tension. Kept in pairs or trios, the weaker fish can be relentlessly harassed. Breeding in captivity has not been documented.
