The Bellus Lyretail Angelfish (Genicanthus bellus) is one of the more sought-after members of the Genicanthus genus, a group that stands apart from other marine angels by being true planktivores in the wild. Found across a broad stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Cocos-Keeling Atoll through the Philippines, Palau, Guam, and out to the Cook and Society Islands, this species typically inhabits steep outer reef drop-offs swept by strong currents, often at considerable depth. That deep-water origin is part of why it rarely makes it into the hobby in large numbers. When it does appear, it commands attention. Males and females show notable sexual dimorphism, a common trait in Genicanthus angels, and in the wild they form harems of a few individuals that cruise the water column picking off passing plankton. In the aquarium, that planktivorous background makes them generally peaceful and compatible with a wide range of tankmates. The main social caveat is keeping multiple males together. That tends to end badly. A single male with one or more females is the natural arrangement and tends to work well. Given their schooling tendencies and need for open swimming room, a spacious tank is genuinely important here, not just a checkbox.
