Found threading through the fast-moving, murky depths of major river systems from Thailand to Indonesia, Bagrichthys hypselopterus is a sizeable Southeast Asian bagrid catfish that cuts a distinctive silhouette thanks to its unusually tall, sail-like dorsal fin. In the wild it hugs muddy substrates in strong currents, hunting insects and small fish in conditions that many species would find challenging. That natural resilience carries over into captive care, where it proves more forgiving than you might expect from a fish of its size. Adults can reach well over a foot in length, so a spacious setup is non-negotiable, but its day-to-day maintenance is manageable enough that beginners with appropriately large tanks can keep it successfully. It appreciates a decent flow rate and soft to moderately hard water with a neutral to slightly acidic lean. Like most bagrids it is an opportunistic omnivore and takes readily to a varied diet of prepared and live or frozen foods. Expect some predatory behavior toward smaller tankmates. This is a fish that will eat what fits in its mouth. Given its eventual size and river-current preferences, pair it with robust companions of comparable scale, and make sure filtration is up to the task of handling a large, active fish over its five to eight year lifespan.
