The blunthead cichlid (Tropheus moorii) is one of the most talked-about African cichlids in the hobby, and for good reason. Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, it exists in more than 50 distinct geographical color forms, some quite bold, and different morphs should never be mixed in the same tank, as they hybridize readily. In the wild, males hold sizable rock territories where they feed heavily on algae and court females through an unusually drawn-out process; captivity doesn't allow room for that natural behavior, so these fish shift into something closer to mbuna-style territorial aggression. Despite a reputation for being difficult, the blunthead is actually reasonably tolerant of other genera like Julidochromis or Eretmodus. It's their own kind they squabble with. The key to keeping them successfully is numbers: a group of 15 to 20 fish dilutes aggression far better than a small cluster, where fighting can turn fatal. Never add new individuals to an established colony. They will not be accepted. Water quality is genuinely critical here, as this species is highly susceptible to bloat, a potentially catastrophic digestive condition. Females are maternal mouthbrooders, carrying clutches of 5 to 15 eggs for over a month. This is unambiguously a species for experienced keepers, but a well-managed colony is endlessly rewarding to watch.
