About

Slender Danios (Brachydanio feegradei) hail from the Rakhine Yoma mountain range in western Myanmar, a geographically isolated region that acts as a natural barrier separating Rakhine State from the rest of the country. First appearing in the hobby around 2005, this species still surfaces on a sporadic basis and has circulated under various trade names including 'Danio sp. Yoma', 'D. sp. gold laser', and 'D. sp. rocket'. The patterning is notably variable. Some individuals carry distinct spot-like markings along the flanks while others lack them entirely, which can make identification a little tricky. Alpha males tend to display noticeably more intense coloration than subordinates, and they earn that status through regular bouts of sparring with rival males. Despite carrying a beginner-friendly care rating, this species deserves a thoughtful approach. It is a shoaling fish rather than a tight schooler, and the dominant individuals can be genuinely aggressive toward subordinates. Fin-nipping is common and losses among stressed fish have been reported. Keeping a group of ten or more helps spread that aggression around. The constant activity and bold feeding behavior can also unsettle timid or slow-moving tankmates, so robust companions are the right call. Robust cyprinids, loaches, characins, and similarly active fish from its home range all make sensible choices.
