Found in the clear, slow-moving forest rivers and seasonal pool systems of the Rakhine Yoma range in south-western Myanmar, Devario xyrops is a small, active cyprinid that was circulating in the hobby under the informal tag 'broken line' before it received a formal description. That nickname comes from its most recognizable feature: a dark blotch on the front half of the flank built from several short, partly merged vertical bars, combined with a broad horizontal stripe running along the rear portion of the body. A pattern shared only with the closely related D. anomalus, from which it can be told apart by its deeper body and slightly lower lateral line scale count. Like its relatives, this is a fish that never really stops moving. It poses no threat to tankmates but its relentless energy and assertive feeding style can stress slower or more timid companions, so pairing it with robust, similarly active fish tends to work better than mixing it into a delicate community. Keeping a group of eight or more individuals brings out the best behavior. Males sharpen their colors when rivals are around, and a proper school channels any competitive energy into natural social interaction rather than harassment. This is a forgiving species for newer keepers comfortable managing a mid-sized aquarium.
