About this strain
The Lionchu is a hybrid variety combining the robust wen head growth of the Lionhead with the strongly arched back profile of the Ranchu — the goal being maximum wen development on a Ranchu body form. In practice, quality varies considerably; the best specimens show a well-developed, symmetrical wen and the smooth curved dorsal line of a Ranchu without a dorsal fin. They're popular in Southeast Asian goldfish markets and have gained traction in Western fancy goldfish circles. Care mirrors Ranchu: excellent water quality, gentle filtration, and careful feeding to avoid wen infection.
Origin
Developed primarily in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, where Lionhead and Ranchu bloodlines were intentionally crossed and the resulting type formalized as a distinct commercial variety.
