About

A pantropical aquatic fern, Ceratopteris thalictroides goes by the same name in both scientific and common usage, but don't let the naming quirk distract you from what's genuinely useful about this plant. Native across a broad swath of tropical Asia and beyond, it grows naturally in shallow waterways, flooded fields, and marshy areas where light and nutrients are plentiful. In the aquarium it develops finely divided, feathery leaves that create a soft, delicate texture and contrast nicely against broader-leaved plants like Amazon swords or Anubias. Under good lighting the growth rate is impressive, and that appetite for nutrients translates directly into competition against algae, making it a handy ally in tanks that are still finding their biological balance. CO2 supplementation isn't strictly required but can noticeably boost growth if you want to fill space quickly. In open-topped or low-rimmed tanks it will readily push leaves to the surface and even above the waterline, taking on a slightly different leaf form up there. It reproduces readily by producing adventitious plantlets along the leaf margins, so you'll rarely run short of new specimens to fill gaps or trade at the local club. Intermediate in care, it rewards attentive keepers without punishing beginners too harshly.

Care guide

Position in moderate to bright light for fastest growth and maximum nutrient uptake, which helps suppress algae. It tolerates a range of water conditions and needs no special substrate, though liquid fertilizer boosts performance. Trim older fronds regularly to encourage denser branching. In open-top tanks, expect it to grow toward the surface and develop slightly different leaf forms above water. This is normal. Thin out excess growth to prevent shading lower plants. It's forgiving enough for beginners but rewards consistent lighting and occasional fertilization.

Breeding

Propagation is effortless: plantlets form naturally along leaf margins and drop or can be gently separated once they develop small roots. Simply replant these in substrate or let them float until established. You can also propagate by cutting the main stem and replanting fragments. New shoots emerge from nodes. Growth is fast enough that you'll have excess plants to trade or relocate within weeks.
