Angler Catfish

The angler catfish (Chaca bankanensis) is one of those species that genuinely makes you do a double-take the first time you see one. Partly because it looks like a piece of waterlogged wood, and partly because you realize you were probably staring right at it for a while before noticing. Native to the swampy forest streams and leaf-litter beds of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Borneo, this catfish has evolved an almost absurd level of camouflage to match its ambush lifestyle. It's darker and carries more reddish tones than its close relative Chaca chaca, and lacks the small hooklets found on that species. What really sets it apart is its feeding strategy: it wriggles its barbels to mimic the movements of a worm, drawing in curious fish before snapping them up with a rapid lunge. It can engulf prey items approaching its own body length. In the aquarium, expect it to spend most daylight hours completely motionless. It's genuinely nocturnal, and a red light is one of the better ways to catch it actually doing anything. One practical note worth flagging: Chaca species appear to acidify their water over time, so water quality monitoring matters more than usual here. It can be housed with others of its own kind, but anything else within range is likely to become a meal.
