Chagunio

About

The chagunio (Chagunius chagunio) is a large cyprinid from the fast-flowing, rocky rivers of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, where it moves through clear, well-oxygenated water with little plant growth. It's an uncommon fish in the hobby, turning up only occasionally as bycatch in wild-caught shipments rather than through deliberate export, so most keepers will never encounter one for sale. The genus Chagunius contains three species that look nearly identical at a glance, and separating them reliably comes down to scale counts and collection locality since their natural ranges don't overlap. Adults reach an impressive size, and the sheer volume of water needed to house a group properly puts this species out of reach for the vast majority of home setups. In the wild the chagunio travels in loose aggregations, and individuals kept alone or in small numbers are prone to shy, skittish behavior, so a group of six or more is the target if you can source them. Tankmates from similar fast-water environments, such as robust cyprinids and loaches, are the natural fit. It has not been bred in captivity as far as anyone knows. Honest advice: unless you have a very large dedicated system, the smaller relative C. baileyi is a far more practical choice if you want to explore the genus.
