A compact and manageable member of the snakehead family, Channa andrao hails from northeastern India and spent years circulating in the hobby under a confusing string of trade names before receiving its formal description. It belongs to a small cluster of Channa species that lack pelvic fins entirely, which gives it a subtly different silhouette from most of its relatives. Like all snakeheads, it breathes atmospheric air using specialized chambers above the gills, so you will regularly see it surfacing for a gulp of air. Make sure the tank has a tight-fitting lid. At under six inches when fully grown, it sits at the manageable end of the snakehead scale and can work in a community setting if tankmates are peaceful and non-territorial, though it is generally safest to keep it species-only or in a carefully chosen arrangement. Juveniles can be housed together, but aggression tends to ramp up as they mature, with females often being the more combative of the sexes. Breeding is genuinely rewarding: the male is a mouthbrooder, and females are known to produce infertile eggs specifically to feed the free-swimming fry, a behavior that makes extended brood care possible. This species has been bred regularly in captivity and is considered an accessible choice even for keepers newer to the snakehead group.
