A predatory cichlid from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, Melanochromis chipokae has a reputation that precedes it in the mbuna world. In the wild it roams sandy patches between rock formations alone, hunting invertebrates and occasionally small fish. A solitary lifestyle that translates directly into its antisocial aquarium behavior. Among mbuna keepers it is widely considered the most aggressive and territorial member of the group, capable of dominating even a well-stocked tank and killing rivals outright. Females and juvenile males are easily confused with the related M. auratus, but chipokae gives itself away with a noticeably more pointed snout, a tell-tale sign of its predatory feeding style. The striped pattern in its caudal fin also runs the full length of the fin, while in auratus it covers only about half. Keeping this species successfully requires a large, overcrowded tank with robust tankmates that do not resemble it in coloration. It must never be housed with other Melanochromis species, as hybridization is a real risk. Breeding is achievable through maternal mouthbrooding, but the male's aggression toward females makes a proper harem setup and plenty of hiding spots essential. Wild populations have reportedly declined from past over-collection for the hobby, so responsible sourcing is worth keeping in mind.
