Walking Catfish

The walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) is one of those species that sounds like a myth until you see it in person. Native to lowland streams, swamps, rice paddies, and seasonally flooded areas across Java and much of Southeast Asia, it has evolved the ability to breathe atmospheric air directly. And can actually suffocate if denied access to the water surface for too long. That same adaptation lets it cross dry land between water bodies using its stiffened pectoral spines as props, provided it stays moist, which its body helps with by secreting mucus and sealing the gills to retain moisture. A tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable with this species, as it will absolutely go wandering given any gap to squeeze through. Most fish in the hobby are albino or leucistic forms, with a marbled variant being common; the wild brown-and-white fish turns up less often. In the aquarium, this is a predatory, fast-growing species that will consume anything it can fit in its very large mouth. Tankmates need to be robust and introduced larger than the Clarias itself, as juveniles grow at a remarkable pace. This is a fish for dedicated keepers with serious space. Not a general community candidate by any stretch.
