The comet goldfish (Carassius auratus var. comet) is one of the most recognizable fish in the hobby, developed through selective breeding in the United States in the late 1800s from common goldfish stock that originally trace back to East Asia. What sets it apart from other single-tailed goldfish is its deeply forked, elongated tail fin, which gives it a fluid, graceful appearance when moving through the water. Coloration ranges from the classic solid orange or yellow to red-and-white combinations, and the fish tends to be noticeably more active and faster-swimming than the fancy double-tailed varieties. That energy is part of its appeal, but it also means a comet needs considerably more space than most beginners expect. A large tank or a well-maintained pond suits it far better than a small aquarium. Comets are hardy, tolerant of a range of conditions, and forgiving of the kinds of mistakes newer keepers tend to make, which is why they've been a gateway fish for generations. Just keep in mind they are heavy waste producers, so good filtration is non-negotiable. Treat one well and it can easily share your home for a decade or two, which is a commitment worth taking seriously before you bring one home.
