The pajama cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera) is one of those fish that looks almost too quirky to be real. A yellow-green face, a sharp dark band running vertically behind the pectoral fins, and a rear half covered in bold reddish-brown spots on a pale background. The whole package comes together in a way that's genuinely odd and charming at the same time. In the wild, this species ranges across a broad sweep of the Indo-Pacific, from Java east to Fiji and up toward the Ryukyu Islands, where groups gather among the branches of stony Porites corals in calm lagoons and sheltered bays. As darkness falls, they disperse to forage near the seafloor, which means in an aquarium they tend to be most active once the lights dim. During the day expect slow, deliberate movement. This is not a fish that races around the tank. That calm disposition makes them an easy fit for reef systems and peaceful community setups alike. They do well in small groups and feel noticeably more confident when kept that way. As a carnivore you'll need to offer meaty foods, but overall this is a forgiving species that holds up well in the hands of a newer saltwater keeper.
