The golden rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) is a distinctive Indo-Pacific species found across a wide sweep of the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific, from the Andaman Islands through Southeast Asia up to southern China and the Ryukyus. Unlike many reef fish that stick rigidly to clear saltwater, this one is genuinely at home in turbid inshore environments. Mangrove edges, seagrass flats near river mouths, and brackish tidal zones are all part of its world. Adults will actually follow the tides in and out of rivers, which makes this one of the more euryhaline fish you'll encounter in the saltwater hobby. Juveniles settle in seagrass beds, while adults tend to work the shallow inshore reef drop-offs, typically no deeper than about 20 feet. One unusual trait for a rabbitfish: this species is reported to be active after dark, unlike most of its close relatives. It's a lifelong schooler, with adult groups typically numbering around ten to fifteen individuals, so a single specimen in a home aquarium will be less content than a small group. Like all siganids, it carries venomous dorsal spines. A passive defense rather than an aggressive trait, since the fish itself is quite peaceful. Plan on a large, well-filtered system with plenty of algae-based nutrition to keep it thriving long-term.
