The Siamese flying fox (Crossocheilus siamensis) is best known in the hobby as one of the most effective algae eaters you can put in a planted tank, particularly for tackling the thread-like varieties that most other fish ignore. In the wild it inhabits clear, fast-moving hill streams and river rapids across Thailand and into Indonesia, grazing on the fine films of algae and microorganisms that coat rocks and submerged surfaces. That preference for current is worth keeping in mind when setting up a tank. Good water movement and plenty of oxygenation will keep this fish comfortable and active. It is a peaceful species overall, though it gets territorial with its own kind. The usual advice is to keep either a single specimen or a group of five or more, since small groups tend to squabble more than individuals or larger numbers. Given enough space, a school is a genuinely interesting sight. These fish are graceful movers and will often be found resting on broad plant leaves or driftwood between bouts of grazing. They can be a bit shy at first, especially in sparsely decorated tanks. With a lifespan pushing ten to twelve years, this is a long-term commitment, and one best suited to a keeper with some experience behind them.
