The Orange-tipped Bristletooth (Ctenochaetus tominiensis) is one of the more visually interesting surgeonfish in the hobby, recognizable by the warm yellow-orange edging along its dorsal and tail fins that contrasts sharply with its darker body. In the wild it ranges across a broad sweep of the Western Central Pacific, from Indonesia and the Philippines through Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Palau, Vanuatu, and Fiji, with sightings also recorded as far as Tonga. Out on the reef it tends to be found alone or in small groups, working the steep, coral-rich drop-offs of sheltered coastal slopes where algae growth is plentiful. Like other bristletooths, it grazes not just on filamentous algae but also on the tiny microfauna living within that algae mat, which makes its feeding behavior a little more nuanced than a simple lawnmower comparison suggests. In the aquarium it brings genuine utility as a grazer of nuisance algae, and it stays compact enough to work in a 75-gallon setup without feeling cramped. It tends to be less aggressive than many other tangs, though it can show some territoriality toward close relatives. A solid intermediate-level choice for a reef system with good flow and plenty of open rockwork to graze.
