Found cruising the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi, Cynotilapia afra is a mbuna that bends the usual rules for its tribe. While most mbuna hug the rocks obsessively, this species is regularly seen forming loose groups in open water just off the rocky walls, feeding on plankton alongside its more territorial rock-grazing counterparts. That dual lifestyle reflects real behavioral variety within the species: dominant males stake out rocky territories and graze the biofilm, while subordinate fish roam more freely. In the aquarium, afra brings the full mbuna personality package. Assertive, quick to defend space, and hard on its own kind. It works best in a densely stocked tank alongside other mbuna of similar temperament, not alongside gentle species like peacocks. Running a harem of several females per male is important for keeping aggression from focusing too heavily on any one fish. Identification can be tricky since it resembles certain Pseudotropheus species, but the unicuspid teeth and dorsal fin markings that continue the flank barring help separate them. Color forms vary considerably across the lake, and mixing those forms is worth avoiding since they will interbreed freely. Despite its attitude, this is actually considered one of the more manageable mbuna for keepers new to the Lake Malawi biotope.
