Emerald Dwarf Danio

Found nowhere else on earth outside of Lake Inle in Myanmar, this tiny miniaturised cyprinid, Danio erythromicron, goes by several trade names including emerald dwarf danio and cross-banded dwarf rasbora. It's one of the smallest fish you'll find in the hobby, and its compact size reflects a genuine biological phenomenon, miniaturisation, shared with a select group of cyprinid genera where sexually mature adults simply never grow large. Despite being sold as a danio, the species was reshuffled taxonomically and now belongs to the genus Celestichthys, grouping it with similarly barred relatives like C. choprae and the spotted C. margaritatus. Males carry vertical body barring and will regularly spar with one another through the day, which can result in the odd nipped fin within the group, though they leave other species alone. This is not a fish to mix with anything boisterous. It gets outcompeted easily and becomes shy. The real trick with this species is numbers: a group of twenty or more transforms it from a nervous, skulking fish into a confident, active presence. Keep it with other small, calm Myanmar natives for a genuinely cohesive biotope setup. An intermediate-level choice, mainly because it needs careful tankmate selection and a well-established, planted aquarium to truly thrive.
