Found in small coastal streams draining the Rakhine Yoma mountain range of western Myanmar, Danio feegradei is a compact, active fish that has trickled into the hobby sporadically since around 2005, sometimes turning up under trade names like 'Danio sp. gold laser' or 'D. sp. rocket'. It belongs to the genus Brachydanio and shows noticeable variation in body patterning. Some individuals carry distinct flank spots while others lack them almost entirely. Alpha males are easy to pick out by their noticeably richer, more intense coloration compared to subordinate fish. Despite its peaceful reputation, this species comes with a social caveat worth taking seriously. It is a shoaling fish rather than a true schooler, and within the group a dominant male can be genuinely hard on lower-ranked individuals. Fin damage and even unexplained losses have been reported by keepers who underestimated the internal hierarchy. Keeping a group of ten or more gives subordinate fish room to spread out and reduces pressure from the alpha. Tankmates should be robust and active rather than slow or timid, as this danio's constant movement and enthusiastic feeding behavior can stress more retiring species. Suitable companions from its native range include various rasboras, garra species, and loaches. This is a rewarding species for a keeper with some experience managing group dynamics.
