The Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus) caused something close to a frenzy when it first appeared in the hobby in late 2006. Initial images were so vivid that some doubted the fish was real. It wasn't hard to see why. Males are dark-bodied with a scattering of pale, pearl-like spots across the flanks, and the fins carry bold red-orange stripes edged in black. Females are plainer but share the spotted body pattern. In the wild, this species comes from shallow, heavily vegetated ponds and spring-fed pools in Myanmar's Shan State, where the water barely exceeds knee depth and aquatic plants grow densely. Despite its small size, it isn't quite the beginner fish it's sometimes sold as. Groups work best when kept in larger numbers, ideally ten or more, since males spar regularly and spread aggression more evenly across a bigger group. Shy fish kept in small numbers rarely show their best color. Taller or boisterous tankmates tend to push them out, so peaceful nano species from similar regions make the most compatible companions. Dense planting replicates the habitat they're used to and seems to bring out more confident, visible behavior. On the upside, breeding is genuinely achievable in a home aquarium without much intervention, which is part of why wild pressure on the species eased relatively quickly after its initial collection boom.
