The Bengal Danio (Devario devario) is a larger, deeper-bodied relative of the familiar zebra danio, native to a broad sweep of South Asia stretching from Pakistan and India through Nepal and Bangladesh, with records from Afghanistan as well. In the wild it turns up in a variety of habitats, rivers, canals, ponds, and seasonally flooded fields, which partly explains its adaptability in captivity. Coloration is clean rather than flashy: each flank carries a single, interrupted pale lateral stripe, and males sharpen up noticeably when rivals are nearby. This is a schooling species that genuinely needs company, and a group of eight to ten or more is where the fish really comes into its own. Kept in smaller numbers it tends to be skittish, but a proper school is confident, lively, and constantly in motion. That energy is worth noting for stocking decisions. This fish won't bully tankmates, but its relentless activity and enthusiasm at feeding time can stress quieter or slower fish. Robust cyprinids, loaches, larger characins, and similarly active species make good companions. Diet in the wild runs to worms, small crustaceans, and insects, and the fish accepts most standard aquarium foods without fuss. It is commercially bred and occasionally appears in a short-bodied variant as well as an albino form, so availability is generally reliable.
