The giant danio (Devario malabaricus) is a larger, more robust relative of the familiar zebra danio, and it brings a noticeably different energy to a tank. Its body carries a blue and yellow horizontal stripe pattern, with the central pigment stripe running all the way into the fork of the tail. A useful identification point that separates it from the closely related and frequently confused Devario aequipinnatus, which is native to northeastern India rather than the west coast of India and Sri Lanka where this species originates. In the wild, giant danios are most at home in flowing water, from rocky hill streams to lowland rivers, where they gather in medium-sized schools and pick off terrestrial insects and organic debris. That active, current-loving lifestyle translates directly into aquarium behavior. These fish are perpetual swimmers and competitive feeders. They are not aggressive, but their sheer energy can stress out slower or more timid species, so choosing robust tankmates of similar size is important. Cyprinids, loaches, larger characins, and many catfishes all make reasonable companions. Keep them in a group of eight or more; a proper school noticeably calms individual fish, encourages better color in males, and channels any low-level rivalry into harmless social display rather than harassment of other species.
