The Nilgiri Danio (Devario neilgherriensis) is one of those species that most hobbyists have never encountered. It remains almost absent from the aquarium trade, and reliable information about it is genuinely scarce. It originates from the hill streams of India, which hints at a preference for clean, well-oxygenated water with some current. Coloration, as described historically, includes a greenish back, silvery flanks with a purplish wash along the belly, and a broad steel-blue lateral stripe running from behind the eye to the tail, bordered above and below by a narrow bright yellow band. The fins are yellowish with fine dark spotting. Like other members of the genus, this is an active, energetic fish that won't bother tankmates intentionally, but its restless movement and competitive feeding style can stress shyer or slower species. Robust companions of similar size work best. Think other cyprinids, loaches, or characins that can hold their own. Being a schooling species, a group of eight or more individuals is strongly recommended: a larger group reduces skittishness, looks far more natural, and encourages males to display their best colors as they sort out their social pecking order. For the right keeper willing to work with limited husbandry data, it's a genuinely interesting find.
