Barred Danio

The barred danio (Devario pathirana) is a genuinely uncommon fish in the hobby, native to the Nilwala River basin in Sri Lanka where it inhabits clear, fast-flowing streams and still pools with pebble or boulder substrates. Its color pattern sets it apart from other Devario species: seven to eleven dark blue, irregularly shaped vertical bars run across the front half of each flank, with a short horizontal stripe continuing through the caudal peduncle and into the central tail rays. You may also see it sold as the 'tiger danio' or 'Ceylon danio.' Because the species is endangered in the wild, it was voluntarily left uncollected by exporters until commercial breeding programs became established, so when you do find it, expect to pay a premium over the more common Devario species. In the aquarium it is more combative than most of its relatives, and while it rarely causes serious injury, its constant motion and enthusiastic feeding can stress quieter or slower companions. Keeping a group of at least six to ten individuals is the best approach, as it channels the aggression among conspecifics and encourages males to show their best colors. Robust tankmates of similar size. Cyprinids, loaches, and larger characins work well. Despite its feisty nature, it is considered manageable for beginner and intermediate keepers who plan their community thoughtfully.
