The urchin clingfish (Diademichthys lineatus) is a small but fascinating marine species, yes, marine, despite the metadata here, found across a wide range from Oman and Mauritius through the Indo-Pacific to Fiji, Tonga, and northern Australia, with its northern limit around southern Japan. It rarely exceeds two inches in length, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in lifestyle. In the wild, this fish lives in tight association with long-spined sea urchins like Diadema or among the branches of sheltered reef corals, using those spiny or structural refuges as both home and hunting ground. Juveniles pick off tiny invertebrates directly from their urchin hosts, including specialized sensory organs and small commensal copepods that share the same microhabitat. Adults broaden their menu considerably, targeting tube feet, burrowing bivalves within coral, and even the eggs of certain shrimp. That intimate relationship with a host organism means that keeping this species successfully in captivity really depends on replicating that association. A reef setup with a suitable urchin is essentially a requirement rather than a suggestion. This is a niche species best suited to dedicated reef keepers who can meet those specific habitat needs.
