The bridled monocle bream (Scolopsis bilineata) is a mid-sized reef fish distributed across a broad sweep of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Maldives and Laccadive Islands east to Fiji, ranging as far north as southern Japan and as far south as Lord Howe Island. Adults wear a bold pattern of white facial stripes against a darker body, which, combined with the characteristic spine on the cheek that gives the genus its common name, makes identification fairly straightforward. What makes this species genuinely interesting is the juvenile's trick of mimicking the poison-fanged blenny Meiacanthus grammistes. A classic Batesian mimicry strategy where a harmless species imitates a genuinely dangerous one to deter predators. As they mature, fish drop the blenny costume and settle into typical adult reef life, often found in pairs across a range of reef habitats. They hunt small fish and benthic invertebrates, so any tankmates small enough to be considered a meal are at risk. Juveniles tend to hang around lagoonal areas and rubble zones in the wild, which is worth keeping in mind when thinking about aquascape. Despite being labeled a beginner species, the 100-gallon minimum requirement and carnivorous diet mean this fish suits someone with a reasonably established marine setup rather than a complete newcomer.
