The Fan Shrimp-goby (Tomiyamichthys latruncularius) is one of those genuinely fascinating reef fish that earns its keep through behavior rather than flash. Found across a broad stretch of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea all the way to Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef, this small goby makes its home on open sand and rubble flats near reef edges. In the wild, it lives in a close partnership with the snapping shrimp Alpheus randalli. A classic goby-shrimp symbiosis where the shrimp constructs and maintains the burrow while the goby stands watch, alert to threats from above. If you want to see this relationship play out in your tank, sourcing a bonded pair of goby and pistol shrimp together is the way to go, and watching them coordinate at the burrow entrance is endlessly entertaining. At two to four inches as an adult, it fits comfortably in a 30-gallon reef or fish-only setup with a proper sand bed deep enough for burrowing. It's listed as a beginner-appropriate species, and its omnivorous appetite means it's not difficult to feed. Just make sure the tank has a tight-fitting lid, as gobies of this type are notorious jumpers.
