The lemon coral goby (Gobiodon citrinus) is a small but characterful fish from the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea across to Samoa and down to the Great Barrier Reef. In the wild it lives in close association with branching Acropora corals, weaving between the branches and rarely straying far from the colony it calls home. That commensal lifestyle carries over into the aquarium, where this species gravitates toward live rock and coral structures, perching on ledges and surveying the tank rather than actively patrolling open water. Despite its modest size, adults top out somewhere around two and a half inches, it has a genuinely interesting defense mechanism: a toxic mucus coating that makes it unpalatable to most predators. In the aquarium, that means few tankmates will bother it, which suits its peaceful nature well. It's typically kept alone or in a bonded pair, since pairs form naturally in the wild. Feeding is straightforward, as it readily accepts small meaty foods, but its overall care puts it at the intermediate level. Less about water chemistry and more about providing the right environment and compatible tankmates. A well-structured reef or live rock aquarium suits it far better than a bare setup.
