Found nestled among the branching arms of Acropora corals across the Western Pacific, from Japan down to Fiji, this small coral goby, Gobiodon atrangulatus, is one of the more specialized reef residents you can keep in a home aquarium. Adults rarely exceed an inch and a half, making them among the smaller fish you'll encounter in the hobby. In the wild, these gobies are tightly tied to living Acropora colonies, which provide both shelter and a foraging ground. And that relationship carries directly into captivity. Providing a suitable coral host isn't strictly mandatory in every setup, but the fish will be noticeably more settled and natural in its behavior when one is available. Like others in the genus, Gobiodon atrangulatus is monogamous, pairing up and staying paired, which makes keeping a bonded duo a rewarding option. The genus also has a noted capacity for facultative air breathing, a curious biological footnote. Care is rated intermediate, largely because of the species' reliance on stable reef conditions and its somewhat specialized needs. This isn't a fish that tolerates neglect well, but for a reefer with a well-established system and some experience, it's a genuinely interesting small predator worth seeking out.
