The Okinawa goby (Gobiodon okinawae) is a small coral-commensal species found across the Western Pacific, from the waters off southern Japan down through Micronesia and as far south as the Great Barrier Reef and Rowley Shoals. In the wild it lives almost exclusively among the branching arms of staghorn Acropora corals in lagoons, hovering between the branches or resting directly on them, and it typically occurs in loose aggregations of several individuals rather than as solitary fish. Its bright, uniform yellow coloration makes it easy to spot against the pale coral framework it calls home. In the aquarium this fish is best suited to a reef setup that includes live Acropora or reasonable facsimiles, since it genuinely needs that structure to feel secure. At under an inch and a half fully grown, it is one of the smaller gobies available to hobbyists, which means it works well in a smaller dedicated reef tank. Because it depends on a specific type of coral environment and benefits from careful attention to water quality, it sits comfortably in the intermediate care category rather than being a first-saltwater-fish pick. A peaceful and fascinating fish to watch, it rewards patient observation with surprisingly complex social behavior among tank companions.
