Flame Cardinalfish
Fowleria flammea
A secretive reef dweller that glows red in the shadows of lagoon corals.

About
The Flame Cardinalfish (Fowleria flammea) is a small, elusive species native to the western Pacific, with confirmed populations around Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, and more recent records from Indonesia and Tonga. In the wild it favors sheltered lagoon environments where scattered coral outcrops provide plenty of cover, and it spends most of the daylight hours tucked out of sight. A behavior it tends to carry right into the aquarium. Don't expect this one to be front and center at feeding time, at least not at first. Its deep reddish coloration makes it a genuinely rewarding fish to spot when it does emerge, particularly under lower or actinic lighting that brings out the warmth in its body. Because of its cryptic, solitary nature, it does best in a reef or fish-only setup that includes caves, overhangs, or dense coral structure where it can feel secure. Feeding carnivorous species like this one can take some patience. Small meaty foods offered at dusk or after lights-dim tend to get better results. At a relatively modest adult size and with an intermediate care rating, it suits a dedicated hobbyist who enjoys observing more subtle, behavior-rich fish rather than bold open-water swimmers.
