The Freshwater Fangblenny (Meiacanthus anema) is one of the more unusual blennies you'll encounter, carrying a genuine chemical defense that makes predators think twice. Those grooved canine teeth aren't just for show. They're connected to venom glands, and fish that try to swallow one tend to spit it back out unharmed. It's a remarkable adaptation that has earned this species a reputation as one of the original "fang blennies" of the genus. Despite the name suggesting freshwater, this fish is found in brackish and estuarine environments across a wide Indo-Pacific range, from Indonesia and the Philippines through New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, typically in shallow coastal areas where mangroves are common. In the aquarium it's a surprisingly relaxed community fish, peaceful toward most tankmates though it can get a bit territorial with others of its own kind, so keep that in mind if you're thinking about multiples. Reproduction follows typical blenny patterns. Eggs are laid and anchored to hard surfaces, with larvae drifting as plankton after hatching. At a manageable adult size and with a beginner-friendly care level, this is an accessible and genuinely fascinating species for reef and brackish setups alike.
