The freshwater puffer fish (Tetraodon mbu) is the largest purely freshwater puffer in the hobby, and it carries that size with a personality to match. Native to the Congo River basin and Lake Tanganyika in central Africa, it also turns up in estuaries, showing a surprising tolerance for varied conditions. Adults grow into genuinely massive animals, and their chunky, mottled bodies are covered in a pattern of dark reticulations over a yellowish-brown base that makes each individual look slightly different. What sets this fish apart from most large cichlids or catfish is its intelligence. Mbu puffers are genuinely curious, and experienced keepers often describe them recognizing their owner and actively investigating anything new in the room. They spend much of their time patrolling and scanning for snails and crustaceans, which their beak-like teeth are built to crush. Despite a reputation for being calmer than many puffer relatives, they are ferociously intolerant of their own kind and should always be kept alone. Encounters between two mbus rarely end well for either fish. The space requirement alone puts this species firmly in advanced territory, and anyone serious about keeping one needs to plan for the long haul.
