The Ariza Labeo (Gymnostomnus ariza) is a substantial riverine fish native to a broad sweep of South and Southeast Asia, appearing in river systems from the Indus basin in Pakistan eastward through India's major drainages, including the Ganges-Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Krishna, and Cauvery, and continuing into Bangladesh and Myanmar. Despite its wide distribution, it remains relatively unfamiliar in the hobby outside its native range, where it is far better known as a food fish. In terms of appearance, adults tend toward a dull, silvery or grayish-white body, sometimes with a yellowish cast. Faint, thin stripes run mostly above the lateral line, and larger individuals may develop a more obvious broad stripe along the midline. It is not a small fish, reaching close to a foot in length at maturity, so it needs genuine space to move. In the wild it breeds seasonally during monsoon flooding, moving into temporarily inundated areas to spawn. Commercially it is produced in ponds using induced breeding. Despite its size, it is listed as a beginner-appropriate species, suggesting it is reasonably tolerant and adaptable once settled. Its taxonomic history is a bit convoluted, having been shuffled between Bangana, Cirrhinus, and Labeo before landing in Gymnostomus, and further revisions may yet follow.
