Koran Angelfish

The half-circled angelfish (Pomacanthus semicirculatus) is one of those species that genuinely stops you in your tracks at two completely different life stages. Juveniles are deep blue-black with a series of white and pale blue curved lines sweeping across the body. The pattern that gives this fish its common name and, to some eyes, resembles the flowing Arabic script of the Quran, hence the alternate name Koran angelfish. As the fish matures, that detailed juvenile pattern gives way to a predominantly olive-green to yellowish-brown adult coloration speckled with small dark spots, making it almost unrecognizable from its younger self. In the wild, this species ranges widely across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa through to Japan and Australia, where juveniles tend to hide in sheltered reef areas and rubble zones while adults roam more openly across the reef. In the aquarium, this is a large angelfish that needs serious space to thrive. Adults can reach a substantial size and have the personality to match, often becoming the undisputed centerpiece and dominant fish in any system. Reef compatibility is questionable at best, as adults are known to sample corals and clam mantles. This is an intermediate-level species that rewards keepers who give it the room and attention it deserves.
